Chicago Social - "Map Quest" - Best of the City, Feb. 2008
From the moment we first spotted Ork Poster's typographic Chicago neighborhood maps, which come in red, blue and black-and-white, we've been obsessed (read: we bought them for everyone we know for holiday presents). Created by Chicago graphic designer Jennifer Beorkrem, 24, the quirky posters show the 91 unofficial neighborhoods of Chicago – with their names written in any direction that will fit in the spaces. Even cooler? The Chicago maps are printed on recycled paper with soy ink at a local, worker-owned press. Supporting Chicago while celebrating Chicago? We like the sound (and the look!) of that. Have friends in other cities? Ork also produces similar maps of Brooklyn, Manhattan, San Francisco and Boston.

This may be the first time we’ve written about anyone outside the metropolitan area — but Jenny Beorkrem is worth it. The Chicago designer created a frenzy on local blogs from Curbed to Design*Sponge when she launched the site for her typographic neighborhood maps, Ork Posters, in November of last year.

We got Ork Posters' original red and grey Chicago Neighborhoods poster in the mail a couple weeks ago, and instantly loved it for (among other things) its inclusion of BB's home neighborhood Galewood, which is NEVER on maps. Then we started seeing the poster popping up everywhere on the internet, and everyone loved it. While the regular version is available on Jenny's site, we've commissioned a 100-print edition of the new "blue" version (PMS 7474) signed and numbered.
